Toucans (Ramphastidae)

Gold-collared Toucanet (Selenidera reinwardtii) - HBW 7, p. 255

French: Toucanet de Reinwardt German: Reinwardtarassari Spanish: Tucanete de Reinwardt
Other common names: Golden-collared Toucanet; Langsdorff’s Toucanet (langsdorffii)

Taxonomy: Pteroglossus Reinwardtii Wagler, 1827, Brazil.
Probably forms a superspecies with S. nattereri, S. gouldii and S. maculirostris; S. culik and S. spectabilis have sometimes been included too, but these two appear to differ from others in voice and display behaviour. Race langsdorffii has sometimes been considered a separate species, but interbreeds with nominate race in N Peru (upper R Ucayali and R Huallaga), where intergrades occur. Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • reinwardtii (Wagler, 1827) - EC & SE Colombia (along Brazil border) S to E Ecuador and CN & NE Peru.
  • langsdorffii (Wagler, 1827) - NC & E Peru, and W Brazil (E, S of R Solimões, to R Purus and probably upper R Madeira), S to NW Bolivia (W of R Beni).
