Taxonomy: Larus glaucescens J. F. Naumann, 1840, North America.
Fossil from late Pleistocene, prehistoric specimens from Alaska and California. Closely linked with L. hyperboreus and L. argentatus, and hybridizes with both. Hybridizes freely with L. occidentalis from S British Columbia to Oregon, and by some authors treated as conspecific. Monotypic.
Distribution: Commander Is E through Aleutians, Pribilofs and S Bering Sea to S Alaska, then SE to N Oregon. Winters from Bering Sea to N Japan and Baja California.
