Glaucous Gull (Larus hyperboreus) - HBW 3, p. 608

Taxonomy: Larus hyperboreus Gunnerus, 1767, northern Norway.
Variously considered monotypic or polytypic; subspecific distinctions subtle. Race leuceretes sometimes merged into nominate race. Larus glaucus is a synonym for L. canus. Four subspecies normally recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • hyperboreus Gunnerus, 1767 - Jan Mayen and Spitsbergen E to Taymyr Peninsula.
  • pallidissimus Portenko, 1939 - Taymyr Peninsula E to Bering Sea, including Pribilof Is.
  • barrovianus Ridgway, 1886 - Alaska to W Canada (NW Mackenzie region).
  • leuceretes Schleep, 1819 - E Mackenzie region through N Canadian archipelago to Greenland and Iceland.
