Taxonomy: Aptenodytes papua J. R. Forster, 1781, Falkland Islands.
Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

papua ( J. R. Forster, 1781) - subantarctic S to c. 60° S.
ellsworthi Murphy, 1947 - Antarctic Peninsula to South Sandwich Is.
