Woodpeckers (Picidae)
Gabon Woodpecker (Dendropicos gabonensis) - HBW 7, p. 467
French: Pic du Gabon
German: Gabunspecht
Spanish: Pito del Gabón
Taxonomy: Dendrobates Gabonensis J. Verreaux and E. Verreaux, 1851, Gabon.
Forms a superspecies with D. lugubris; sometimes treated as conspecific, a view supported by the fact that race reichenowi is somewhat intermediate between that species and nominate gabonensis; indeed, reichenowi was formerly considered to belong instead to D. lugubris. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- reichenowi Sjöstedt, 1893 - S Nigeria and SW Cameroon.
- gabonensis (J. Verreaux & E. Verreaux, 1851) - S Cameroon (except SW) and SW Central African Republic S to N Angola (Cabinda), and E across N & C Zaire (E to W slope of Ruwenzoris, S to W Kasai) to extreme W Uganda.
