Taxonomy: Pseudoprion turtur crassirostris Mathews, 1912, Bounty Island .
Sometimes placed in P. turtur, with which probably forms superspecies. Race pyramidalis formerly current, now absorbed by nominate. In past, population of P. turtur at Kerguelen mistakenly ascribed to present species. Two subspecies normally recognized.

- crassirostris (Mathews, 1912) - Snares, Bounty, Chatham Is.
- eatoni (Mathews, 1912) - Heard, Auckland Is.
