Taxonomy: Larus Pipixcan Wagler, 1831, Mexico.
Considered closely related to L. atricilla, with an almost equally unspecialized display repertoire. Monotypic.
Distribution: Inland North America, from British Columbia to Alberta and from Montana to Minnesota, with scattered populations in N Rocky Mts and Great Basin. Winters mainly off South America, S to Chile.
