Taxonomy: Sterna Forsteri Nuttall, 1834, Saskatchewan River.
Monotypic.
Distribution: British Columbia S to C Californian coast and E to S Ontario, Great Lakes and N Indiana; New York (Long I) to North Carolina; Gulf Coast, from Alabama to Tamaulipas, NE Mexico. Winters from S California to Panama, and from North Carolina to Gulf of Honduras.
