Crows (Corvidae)
Forest Raven (Corvus tasmanicus) - HBW 14, p. 634
French: Corbeau de Tasmanie
German: Tasmankrähe
Spanish: Cuervo de Tasmania
Other common names: New England/Relict Raven
Taxonomy: Corvus marianae tasmanicus Mathews, 1912, Tasmania.
Formerly considered a race of C. coronoides. Has been suggested that race boreus (sometimes referred to erroneously as novaanglica) merits treatment as a full species, though without supporting evidence; recent studies of vocalizations indicate that current treatment is appropriate. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- boreus I. Rowley, 1970 - NE New South Wales, in E Australia.
- tasmanicus Mathews, 1912 - coast of extreme SE Australia, islands in Bass Strait and Tasmania.
