Taxonomy: Procellaria gavia J. R. Forster, 1844, Queen Charlotte Sound, New Zealand.
Sometimes considered race of P. puffinus. Until quite recently included P. huttoni. Monotypic.
Distribution: Islands off NE North I and in Cook Strait (New Zealand).
