Taxonomy: Picus (Chloropicus) Pyrrhogaster Malherbe, 1845, South Africa; error = Sierra Leone.
Often placed in a separate genus Thripias along with D. namaquus and D. xantholophus. Forms a superspecies with latter. Monotypic.
Distribution: Sierra Leone and S Guinea E to S Nigeria (Niger Delta) and SW Cameroon.
