Taxonomy: Picus punctuligerus Wagler, 1827, Senegambia.
Forms a superspecies with C. nubica, C. bennettii and C. scriptoricauda, and all sometimes considered conspecific. Races intergrade in Sudan and NE Zaire. Described race batesi (N Cameroon) synonymized with nominate. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- punctuligera (Wagler, 1827) - SW Mauritania (c. 60 km N of Rosso) and Senegambia E to SW Sudan and S to C Ivory Coast (Lamto), Ghana (Mole), S Nigeria (Abeokuta), C Cameroon (Mt Zoro and Mbakaou) and NE Zaire (upper Uele Valley).
- balia (Heuglin, 1871) - S Sudan to extreme NE Zaire.
