Taxonomy: Pteroglossus Frantzii Cabanis, 1861, Aguacate, Costa Rica.
Forms a superspecies with P. torquatus; although not in full contact, these two have hybri­dized, and they may be conspecific. Both belong to the “P. torquatus group”, which also includes P. aracari, P. castanotis and P. pluricinctus, all these species being closely related. Monotypic.

Distribution: From W Costa Rica (Gulf of Nicoya) S into Panama (W Chiriquí; formerly occurring E to Veraguas).
