Taxonomy: Anas nyroca Güldenstädt, 1770, southern Russia.
Considered by some to form superspecies with A. australis, A. baeri and A. innotata. Hybridization recorded in captivity with several species of genera Aythya, Anas and Netta and with Bucephala clangula. Monotypic.
Distribution: Fragmented from W Europe eastwards to W Mongolia; isolated populations from Libya eastwards to NE Pakistan.
