Taxonomy: Sternula nereis Gould, 1843, Bass Strait.
Overlaps in SE Australia with S. albifrons, and occasionally hybridizes. Four subspecies recognized.

- horni Mathews, 1912 - Western Australia.
- nereis (Gould, 1843) - South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania.
- exsul (Mathews, 1912) - New Caledonia.
- davisae (Mathews & Iredale, 1913) - N North I, New Zealand.
