Taxonomy: Pelecanus aristotelis Linnaeus, 1761, Sweden.
Sometimes placed in genus Stictocarbo. Race riggenbachi may be inseparable from desmarestii. Three subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- aristotelis (Linnaeus, 1761) - Iceland and N Scandinavia S to Iberian Peninsula.
- desmarestii (Payraudeau, 1826) - C Mediterranean E to Black Sea.
- riggenbachi Hartert, 1923 - coast of Morocco.
