Taxonomy: Platalea Leucorodia Linnaeus, 1758, Europe; restricted to Sweden.
Considered by some to form superspecies with P. minor, P. alba and P. regia; P. regia sometimes regarded as race of present species. Asian populations have been assigned separate race, major, but doubtfully valid. Three subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • leucorodia Linnaeus, 1758 - S Spain, Holland and SE Europe to C & E Asia, extending S to Persian Gulf, India and Sri Lanka; winters in W & E Africa and SE China.
  • balsaci de Naurois & Roux, 1974 - islands off coast of Mauritania.
  • archeri Neumann, 1928 - coasts of Red Sea and Somalia.
