Taxonomy: Charadrius apricarius Linnaeus, 1758, Lappland.
Validity of subspecific division regularly debated, due to considerable variation within local populations and no apparent differences in measurements. Birds of British Is to N Germany formerly considered separate race, oreophilos. Two subspecies normally recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • altifrons (C. L. Brehm, 1831) - EC Greenland, Iceland and Faeroes to N Fenno-Scandia, and thence E to Taymyr Peninsula.
  • apricaria (Linnaeus, 1758) - British Is, through W Germany, Denmark and S Fenno-Scandia to Baltic states.
