Taxonomy: Eudyptes sclateri Buller, 1888, Auckland Islands.
Forms superspecies with E. pachyrhynchus and E. robustus; has been considered race of former. Scientific name E. atratus formerly applied, but now officially suppressed, owing to confusion with E. robustus. Monotypic.
Distribution: Islands to S and SE of New Zealand, with vast majority of population breeding almost exclusively on Bounty and Antipodes Is.
