Taxonomy: Trochilus superciliosus Linnaeus, 1766, Cayenne.
Often considered conspecific with P. longirostris, but with disjunct distributions the two are probably better treated as forming a superspecies; all races of P. malaris except nominate have also traditionally been attributed to present species instead, but their affinities appear to lie with that species. Race muelleri has been associated with P. malaris ochraceiventris. Venezuelan birds sometimes separated as race saturatior, but they fall within variation found in nominate race. Subspecies and Distribution:
- superciliosus (Linnaeus, 1766) - S Venezuela, the Guianas and N Brazil (N of Amazon in Pará and Roraima).
- muelleri Hellmayr, 1911 - N Brazil (S of Amazon in Pará and Maranhão).
