Taxonomy: Prodotiscus zambesiæ Shelley, 1894, Zomba, Malawi.
Forms a superspecies with P. insignis, with which has been considered conspecific; the two may meet in Angola, where some birds possibly intermediate, including unassignable form known as “lathburyi”; further study required. N Tanzanian birds formerly separated as race reichenowi, but this is now considered a synonym of ellenbecki. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- ellenbecki Erlanger, 1901 - S Ethiopia, Kenya and N Tanzania.
- zambesiae Shelley, 1894 - C Angola, S Zaire and S Tanzania, S to NE Namibia, S Zimbabwe and C Mozambique.
