Taxonomy: Casuarius Bennetti Gould, 1857, New Britain.
Seven subspecies (papuanus, goodfellowi, claudii, shawmayeri, hecki, bennetti and picticollis) traditionally recognized, but good evidence for their validity lacking (see page 90). Monotypic.
Distribution: New Guinea, Japen I (off NW New Guinea); also New Britain, where presumably introduced.
