Taxonomy: Megapodius freycinet Gaimard, 1823, Waigeo.
Forms superspecies with M. nicobariensis, M. cumingii, M. bernsteinii, M. eremita, M. layardi, M. affinis, and M. reinwardt, all of which were formerly lumped together as races of present species. Race geelvinkianus may merit treatment as full species. Birds of N Moluccas sometimes awarded separate race, quoyii. Species said to hybridize with M. reinwardt on some islands in Geelvink Bay (where M. reinwardt apparently absent) and also in S Moluccas (where present species not known to occur).
