Taxonomy: Cassicus atro-virens d’Orbigny and Lafresnaye, 1838, Yungas of La Paz, Bolivia.
Recent analysis of mitochondrial DNA indicates that this species belongs to a clade containing also P. wagleri and montane races of P. angustifrons. Monotypic.
Distribution: E slope of Andes from C Peru (Huánuco) S to C Bolivia (Cochabamba and Santa Cruz, also nearby ridges e.g. Serranía Mosetenes).
