Taxonomy: Coracias Sumatranus Raffles, 1822, interior of Sumatra.
Individual variation considerable. Several described races considered probably untenable: morator (from S Thailand), ardescens (SE Thailand) and khmerensis (Cambodia and S Indochina) regarded as inseparable from laoensis, and pallescens (Thai-Malay Peninsula) better treated as synonymous with sumatranus; orientalis possibly indistinguishable from brunnescens; further study of geographical variation is desirable. Four subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- laoensis Meyer de Schauensee, 1929 - S Myanmar, Thailand (except extreme S) and Indochina.
- sumatranus (Raffles, 1822) - extreme S Thailand S to Sumatra.
- brunnescens Hartert, 1916 - N Natuna Is and NW Borneo (Sarawak).
- orientalis Mayr, 1938 - Borneo (except NW).
