Auks (Alcidae) - HBW 3
Dovekie (Alle alle)
French: Mergule nain
German: Krabbentaucher
Spanish: Mérgulo Atlántico
Other common names: Little Auk
Taxonomy: Alca Alle Linnaeus, 1758, Scotland.
In past, species was commonly placed in monotypic genus Plautus, but this name was deemed unavailable, giving way to Alle. Normally treated as polytypic, but evidence incomplete and requires further examination; subspecific status of populations breeding Severnaya Zemlya, New Siberian Is and Bering Sea uncertain. Two subspecies normally recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- alle (Linnaeus, 1758) - E Baffin I through Greenland and Iceland to Jan Mayen, Spitsbergen, Bear I and Novaya Zemlya.
- polaris Stenhouse, 1930 - Franz Josef Land, and possibly this race in region from Severnaya Zemlya E to Bering Sea (St Lawrence I, Little Diomede).
- Least Concern
