Taxonomy: Carbo auritus Lesson, 1831, New Zealand; error, North America.
Sometimes placed in genus Hypoleucos. Four subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- cincinatus (Brandt, 1837) - Aleutian Is to Alexander Archipelago (W Canada).
- albociliatus Ridgway, 1884 - Vancouver I to Gulf of California.
- auritus (Lesson, 1831) - Gulf of St Lawrence to Cape Cod and W to Utah.
- floridanus (Audubon, 1835) - North Carolina and Florida S to Cuba.
