Typical Antbirds (Thamnophilidae)

Dot-winged Antwren (Microrhopias quixensis) - HBW 8, p. 609

French: Grisin étoilé German: Tropfenflügel-Ameisenfänger Spanish: Hormiguerito del Quijos

Taxonomy: Thamnophilus quixensis Cornalia, 1849, eastern Ecuador.
Relationships uncertain; extensive study of morphological and vocal characters indicated close relationship with Formicivora; genetic study in which latter genus not included, however, suggested closeness to “stipple-throated antwren assemblage” of Myrmotherula. Races boucardi and virgatus intergrade in Honduras; future research may indicate that they should be merged. On basis of vocal as well as plumage differences, possibly also differences in habitat preferences, it is very likely that some other races merit elevation to species rank; e.g. emiliae su.. On basis of vocal as well as plumage differences, possibly also differences in habitat preferences, it is very likely that some other races merit elevation to species rank; e.g. emiliae suggested as a separate species; further study required.
