Taxonomy: Ardea Virgo Linnaeus, 1758, India.
Genus sometimes merged with Grus, but usually considered sufficiently distinct. Monotypic.

Distribution: C Eurasia, from Black Sea E to Mongolia and NE China. Winters in Indian Subcontinent and in sub-Saharan Africa from L Chad to Ethiopia. Small, disjunct breeding populations in Turkey and in Atlas Mts, NW Africa.
