Taxonomy: Fringilla sanguinea Gould, 1838, Erzurum, Turkey.
Morphometric data indicate that treatment of the two races as separate species, forming a superspecies, may be more appropriate; further research, including molecular analysis, required. Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • alienus Whitaker, 1897 - Morocco and NE Algeria.
  • sanguineus ( Gould, 1838) - CS & E Turkey, Lebanon, N Israel, W Syria, S Caucasus, Iran, S Turkmenistan and N Afghanistan E to SE & E Kazakhstan,Tajikistan, and NW China (N & W Xinjiang).
