Taxonomy: Picus haematogaster Tschudi, 1844, Peru.
Formerly placed in genus Phloeoceastes with seven other species, all of which are now lumped into Campephilus. Race splendens, sometimes regarded as a separate species, appears to differ vocally; further study needed. Two subspecies currently recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- splendens Hargitt, 1889 - Panama to W Ecuador.
- haematogaster (Tschudi, 1844) - E Colombia to E Peru.
