Taxonomy: Crax tomentosa Spix, 1825, in Sylvis paludosis fl. Nigri prope pagum Barcellonam.
All members of genus form superspecies; all have been placed, together with the members of Pauxi, and less often Nothocrax, in Crax. Range meets that of M. salvini in C Colombia, without any evidence of interbreeding. Monotypic.
Distribution: Guyana, Venezuela S of R Orinoco, NW Brazil and E Colombia.
