Typical Owls (Strigidae)
Crested Owl (Lophostrix cristata) - HBW 5, p. 206
French: Duc à aigrettes
German: Haubenkauz
Spanish: Búho Corniblanco
Taxonomy: Strix cristata Daudin, 1800, French Guiana.
Genus considered by some to be related to Otus, and by others to Bubo. Recent studies, however, also suggest that it may have some link with Pulsatrix. Superficial resemblance to Afrotropical Jubula considered probably due to convergence. Race stricklandi possibly specifically distinct. Three subspecies recognized.

- stricklandi P. L. Sclater & Salvin, 1859 - S Mexico to W Panama and W Colombia.
