Taxonomy: Perdix Sephaena A. Smith, 1836, Marico River and Limpopo River, western Transvaal.
Recently proposed reorganization of Francolinus places present species in genus Peliperdix with F. coqui, F. albogularis, F. schlegelii and F. lathami. Has been included with F. streptophorus in genus Dendroperdix. Race rovuma has been considered separate species, but hybridizes extensively with spilogaster in Kenya; this tendency has been attributed to destruction of habitat by humans. Five subspecies recognized.

- rovuma G. R. Gray, 1867 - Kenyan coast S to N Mozambique.
