Taxonomy: Myiothera melanothorax Temminck, 1823, Mount Gedeh (6º47¢ S, 106º59¢E), west Java.
Has sometimes been placed in genus Macronus. Plumage geographically variable, to greater extent than is reflected in current subspecific classification; on other hand, at least one authority prefers to merge mendeni and albigula with nominate. A further, undescribed race may exist on Bawean I, off NE Java. Five subspecies currently recognized.
