Taxonomy: Sparvius caerulescens Vieillot, 1817, Cayenne.
Genus Ischnosceles is best regarded as forgotten name. Relation of genus unclear; probably allied to Neotropical sub buteonines, rather than Afrotropical Polyboroides. Substantial geographical variation, with three well defined groups, perhaps approaching separate species status: nigra group, including races livens and balzarensis; caerulescens group; and gracilis group, including race flexipes.
