Cisticolas and Allies (Cisticolidae)

Common Tailorbird (Orthotomus sutorius) - HBW 11, p. 423

French: Couturière à longue queue German: Rotstirn-Schneidervogel Spanish: Sastrecillo Común
Other common names: (Long-tailed/Indian) Tailorbird

Taxonomy: Motacilla sutoria Pennant, 1769, Sri Lanka.
Closely related to O. atrogularis, but the two are widely sympatric and differ in habitat choice. Presence of both highland and lowland forms on Sri Lanka, and the fact that these also differ vocally from populations elsewhere in range, warrants taxonomic evaluation. Nine subspecies recognized.

  • guzuratus (Latham, 1790) - Pakistan and peninsular India.
  • fernandonis Whistler, 1939 - highland Sri Lanka.
