Plovers (Charadriidae)
Common Ringed Plover (Charadrius hiaticula) - HBW 3, p. 425
French: Pluvier grand-gravelot
German: Sandregenpfeifer
Spanish: Chorlitejo Grande
Other common names: (Greater) Ringed Plover
Taxonomy: Charadrius Hiaticula Linnaeus, 1758, Sweden.
Probably forms superspecies with C. semipalmatus, with which sometimes considered conspecific; some hybridization on Baffin I. Distinction between subspecies based on moult; features changing clinally N-S, rather than E-W, make it impossible to draw dividing line in NW Europe. Populations from Canada to Faeroes formerly awarded race psammodroma, but based on extremely minor differences in average size, and not nowadays accepted. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- hiaticula Linnaeus, 1758 - NE Canada through Greenland and Iceland to S Scandinavia, and S to NW France; winters from British Is S to Africa.
- tundrae (Lowe, 1915) - N Scandinavia and N Russia; winters from Caspian Sea and SW Asia S to S Africa.
