Taxonomy: Anas ferina Linnaeus, 1758, Europe.
Forms superspecies with A. valisineria. Hybridization with several species of Aythya and Amazonetta brasiliensis recorded in captivity. Monotypic.
Distribution: Iceland and W Europe E through C Asia to SE USSR; scattered populations from Turkey through S Palearctic to NE China and N Japan.
