Taxonomy: Anas Clangula Linnaeus, 1758, Europe.
Sometimes placed in genus Glaucionetta. Infrequent hybridization with B. islandica in the wild. Validity of subspecies has been questioned. Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • clangula (Linnaeus, 1758) - N and C Europe, Asia E through USSR and N Mongolia to Kamchatka.
  • americana (Bonaparte, 1838) - Alaska to Labrador.
