Other common names: Common Golden-back, Common Golden-backed Woodpecker, Golden-backed Three-toed Woodpecker; Indian Flameback (malabaricum)

Taxonomy: Picus javanensis Ljungh, 1797, Java.
Forms a superspecies with D. shorii. Proposed race borneonense (Borneo except NE) considered inseparable from nominate. Six subspecies recognized.

  • malabaricum Whistler & Kinnear, 1934 - W India.
  • intermedium (Blyth, 1845) - Bangladesh and Assam to C & E Myanmar, SC China (SW Yunnan) and N Vietnam, and S to Thailand (except peninsular) and Cochinchina.
  • everetti (Tweeddale, 1878) - W & C Philippines (Balabac, Palawan and Calamian Is).
