Taxonomy: Anser melanotos Pennant, 1769, Ceylon.
Sometimes isolated in its own tribe (Sarkidiornini). Race sylvicola sometimes considered full species. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- melanotos (Pennant, 1769) - Africa S of Sahara and Madagascar; tropical Asia from Pakistan through Indian Subcontinent to extreme S China.
- sylvicola Ihering & Ihering, 1907 - tropical South America from Colombia to N Argentina.
