Taxonomy: Parra gallinacea Temminck, 1828, Menado, Sulawesi.
Genus occasionally lumped with Microparra and Actophilornis in Metopidius, or alternatively with Actophilornis and Metopidius in Jacana, but neither proposal widely accepted. Validity of races uncertain and frequently challenged; there is apparently clinal increase in size from N to S, but considerable variation in size in any one population; supposed subspecific differences in tone of upperparts also seems variable; birds from Kai Is (SE Moluccas) may represent a racially mixed and possibly unstable population, although general characters perhaps closest to novaeguinae; species may be more appropriately considered monospecific, but further study required. Three subspecies currently recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • gallinacea (Temminck, 1828) - SE Borneo, Sulawesi, SE Philippines (Mindanao), Moluccas and Lesser Sundas.
