Taxonomy: Charadrius collaris Vieillot, 1818, Paraguay.
Shorter-winged population occurring from Mexico to N Brazil is by some authors considered subspecies gracilis. Monotypic.

Distribution: WC Mexico through Central America to W Colombia and W Ecuador, and E of Andes S to N Argentina; C Chile.
