Taxonomy: Ardea Cocoi Linnaeus, 1766, Cayenne.
Forms superspecies with A. cinerea and A. herodias. Monotypic.
Distribution: Most of S America excluding Andes, from E Panama S to Aysén (Chile) and Chubut (Argentina).
