Clay-coloured Thrush (Turdus grayi) - HBW 10, p. 668

Other common names: Clay-coloured Robin, Gray Robin, Garden Thrush, Gray’s Thrush

Taxonomy: Turdus Grayi Bonaparte, 1838, Alta Vera Paz, Guatemala.
Has in the past been thought to form a superspecies, or even to be conspecific, with T. nudigenis, but differences between the two considered too great to warrant such treatment. Geographical variation for the most part very slight; some races perhaps better merged. Proposed race umbrinus (from Guatemala) apparently based on fresh nominate specimens. Nine subspecies currently recognized.

  • tamaulipensis (Nelson, 1897) - extreme S USA (S Texas) and E Mexico (E Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, N Veracruz).
  • microrhynchus Lowery & Newman, 1949 - EC Mexico (SC San Luis Potosí).
  • lanyoni Dickerman, 1981 - Caribbean drainage of S Mexico, N Guatemala and S Belize.

  • casius (Bonaparte, 1855) - Costa Rica S to NW Colombia.
  • incomptus (Bangs, 1898) - Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, in N Colombia.
