Taxonomy: Podiceps clarkii Lawrence, 1858, California and New [sic] Mexico.
Recently separated from A. occidentalis, on grounds of wide sympatry with only rare hybridization; probably prevented by differences in advertising calls. Formely considered merely light phase of A. occidentalis. Name clarkii was also applied to smaller southern race, including birds of both colour morphs, now classified as A. o. ephemeralis and A. c. clarkii. Distribution limits of races not well established. Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • clarkii Lawrence, 1858 - Mexican Plateau from N Chihuahua to N Guerrero; Nayarit; (?) L Caballo (New Mexico).
  • transitionalis Dickerman, 1986 - W USA, N to Utah and Colorado.
