Spanish: Carpintero Canelo
Taxonomy: Meiglyptes loricatus Reichenbach, 1854, Peru.
Possibly not very closely related to others of genus. Wide individual variation, making racial delimitation difficult; birds from C Magdalena Valley, in Colombia, described as race degener, but differences from innotatus considered insignificant. Designated type locality of Peru falls outwith known range of species, and may require revision. Four subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- diversus Ridgway, 1914 - E Nicaragua S to W Panama.
- mentalis Cassin, 1860 - Panama and NW Colombia.
- innotatus Todd, 1917 - N Colombia.
- loricatus (Reichenbach, 1854) - W Colombia to SW Ecuador (S to Guayas).
