Taxonomy: Capito brunneipectus Chapman, 1921, Villa Braga, River Tapajós, Brazil.
Was long merged in C. niger, but differs markedly in morphology from all races of that species, and has distinctive song; may not be related directly to C. niger. Monotypic.
Distribution: Brazil S of Amazon, between lower R Madeira and lower R Tapajós; S limit of range unknown.
