Taxonomy: Muscisaxicola cinerea R. A. Philippi [Krumwiede] & Landbeck, 1864, Arañas, Valle Largo, Las Chacarillas, Cordilleras de Santiago, Chile.
Formerly considered conspecific with M. alpinus by some authors. Two subspecies currently recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- cinereus R. A. Philippi [Krumwiede] & Landbeck, 1864 - breeds Peru (S Puno), Bolivia, N Chile (Coquimbo S to Talca) and W Argentina (Mendoza); S populations migrate N.
- argentina Hellmayr, 1932 - breeds NW Argentina (Jujuy S to Catamarca); S populations migrate N.
